The analogue Braun alarm clock I’ve been using for yoga has stopped working. It’s nearly 40 years old! It’s simple, compact design and has served us well. The ticktock of the second hand is a distinctive feature. In fact a few people commented on this when I started teaching online - so I’ve had to make sure it’s never too close to the microphone on my phone.

I’ve spent quite a bit of time researching an alternative and finally settled for a comparable, even smaller, updated digital version.

It’s got me thinking more about how precious time is. Every second counts. A bit like each breath is counted in the Astanga Yoga practice. This week has been great to get into a rhythm and flow with the new year. It’s hard to get started and even harder to keep going.

But being present and more mindful is quite a challenge in our fast paced lifestyle. Post Christmas the pressure is on. We often feel the need (especially in January), to get some things booked in to see us through the winter months. Bargain hunting through the ‘Sales’ is irresistible. There’s endless adverts for holidays. New offers at health clubs. Keep going and do more.

Taking a moment to appreciate where we are, savouring moments, and being present is a real skill. For the present moment has already gone. The art of ‘slow living’ (and that’s a whole other topic) is about appreciating what is important. What we need and what we can do without. Taking time and appreciating things which bring us joy and meaning.

Though like the clock I use for keeping timings whilst I’m teaching, these things need to work. In this case marking time, and each moment, before it’s gone. It’s also made me think more about recognising our most beloved belongings. Identifying what we can’t live without. Maybe it’s time to recycle the old Braun clock? I like the look of the new one but wonder whether it will last another 40 years? And I will miss the sound of the ticktock.
