Minimising Regret

I love 6 Music, and Lauren Laverne's morning show amongst others. Last week there was a really interesting feature on the Math's of Life (25th April - 2 hours and 19mins in, if you're interested). This was with Professor Hannah Fry who studies patterns of human behaviour.

She spoke about 'Minimising Regret' as apposed to what we can gain from a situation. This can impact how we make decisions when we're uncertain of the outcome. This really appealed to me as I've recently had some Life Coaching sessions to help manage a few things a bit better. And both approaches are like 'Zooming Out' to look at things with a better perspective. Also, I feel some of the best decisions I've ever made have come from a point where you really zoom out, see the big picture and work out what is important.

So, you might know our little bitch Ziggy had a litter two years ago. (Having puppies was always something I'd wanted to do.) It was always my intention to keep the runt. Mr. Brown nearly died and if it wasn't for our intervention he wouldn't be here. However, now he's quite a handsome chap, very 'entitled', and 2. Which in dog terms means he's a young adult protecting his bitches! There's a few behavioural issues to sort out, so we've started dog training. (Which is actually fun and I enjoyed with my old lab nearly 14 years ago).

The 6 Music feature, alongside my life coaching has made me not only zoom out but even more appreciate the little things in life which bring us joy. I've covered these concepts here before with sharing time with family & friends, up cycling, gardening & propagating, learning new DIY skills etc. and of course yoga of the 'yogaeverydamnday' variety. (Read the previous blog for more about this.) https://www.vikkiyoga.com/post/why-bother

In one of my classes this week I was talking about this and one of my clients shared an article from The Guardian about 100 things to improve the quality of your life. There's a lot close to my heart on this list. For example 25. Look closely. 36. Stretch in the morning. 47. Take your earphones out and listen to the world. 53. Repair clothes.

Here's the link

However, there's a couple I don't resonate with. Number 17. Not being weird about loading the dishwasher, (often in our house it's loaded really badly and things have to be re washed). Also number 100 - about wearing yellow.

Have a lovely long weekend. I hope you get some time to zoom out, minimise regret and do something which is of value and brings you joy. Dogs behaving nicely is definitely up there for me.

Namaste
