Copenhagen

Last weekend I was in Copenhagen with my daughters. I've wanted to go for a long time as I love the design ethos as well as the lifestyle and wanted to experience it for myself.

So I thought I'd share 10 things I love about the place.

1. Design - many recognisable, influential brands come from Copenhagen. An appreciation for beautiful high quality materials, with simple unfussy style shines through. As well as being able to think 'outside the box' and think creatively about modern day problems including mental health.

2. Sustainability - it comes across that this is high up on everyones agenda, from reducing carbon footprint to looking after your stuff better. Buying perfectly curated 2nd hand and vintage is considered cool.

3. Family friendly - it seems local neighbourhoods, transport systems and pretty much everything you can see is geared up for everyone. Apparently the Danes have a very good work/life balance.

4. Trust - the city is full of bikes and cycle lanes most are left unchained. As are beautiful planters and furniture outside homes and stores. We even experienced a self serve, unsupervised charity shop with many designer pieces.

6. Clean and tidy - it's very noticeable how clean everywhere is and there is very much a sense of pride and order with the way things are displayed.

7. Plants and propagation - as is the trend there are lots of interior plants but carefully placed, curated and looked after. I was also aware of propagation vases in several places used for decoration.

8. Pastries - you can't go to Denmark without trying their gourmet pastries. The importance of 'small luxuries' like a great pastry and coffee are a big part of their culture.

9. Day time candles - I loved this. We mostly associate candles with the dark, however, lots of places had them lit during the day to create the hygge feel.

10. Calm - there is very much a sense of calm everywhere. People are so polite and friendly, we only saw one homeless person who was being helped. The police during the changing of the guards at the Royal Palace appeared relaxed, were chatting and one even hugged another. I don't think we heard a siren the whole weekend.

Can't wait to go again.
